There was a country called the People's Democratic Republic of Yemen, and this state endured for around 23 years. However in the early nineties this state [along with the Yemen Arab Republic] unified to become the Republic of Yemen. There are many powers today calling for a return to secession and the abolishment of everything that has taken place over the past decade and a half.

In the rural villages around southern Yemen, the signs that a separatist movement is growing are unmistakable.

A spokesperson for the Southern Movement, which is demanding the independence of southern Yemen, yesterday said the government must do more for families of the civilian victims killed or injured in an air strike in the Abyan village of al Maajala in December.

A protester was killed and two injured after police opened fire on a pro-separatist demonstration in the southern province of Lahj on Thursday, witnesses said. They said police was trying to disperse protesters who gathered outside the local government building in Radfan district trying to raise a flag of the former south Yemen on the building.
